Top 5 Day Trips from Our Doorstep

Looking to venture a little further while you’re here? Whether you’re chasing sea air, local history, or a good mooch with a great coffee, here are five of our favourite day trips — all under an hour away.

1. Saltburn-by-the-Sea (12 miles)

Victorian charm meets laid-back surf vibes at this coastal gem. Wander the pier, ride the cliff lift, and reward yourself with seaside classics (ice cream first, obviously). Bring the dog, the bucket and spade, or just yourself — it’s a breath of fresh air, literally.

2. Great Ayton & Captain Cook Country

A pretty village with tearooms, riverside strolls, and a touch of history — it’s the boyhood home of Captain Cook. Climb up to Roseberry Topping if you’re feeling energetic, or just settle in with a cuppa and enjoy the view.

3. Helmsley & Rievaulx Abbey

Helmsley is everything you want from a market town: bookshops, bakeries, and boutiques galore. From there, take a scenic walk or drive to the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, nestled in a wooded valley that feels like a step back in time.

4. Guisborough Forest & Walkway

Perfect for families, runners, and anyone in need of some green space. There are well-marked trails, sculptures hidden in the trees, and enough wildlife to keep little ones wide-eyed. Bikes, dogs, and muddy puddles welcome.

5. Whitby (just over 20 miles, and well worth it)

Gothic drama, legendary fish & chips, and the ghost of Dracula – what’s not to love? Explore the Abbey ruins, potter around the old town, or hop on a boat trip for a fresh perspective. Just don’t forget your camera.
